About
A sweetened C2–4 gas fraction containing butadiene above 0.1% w/w; despite the 'sweetened' label indicating mercaptan removal, the butadiene content still triggers EU Annex II prohibition for cosmetics.
C2–C4 olefinic gas stream that has undergone mercaptan oxidation (sweetening) to reduce sulfur odor, but retaining 1,3-butadiene above the 0.1% w/w threshold. The 'sweetened' descriptor does not remove butadiene, and the conditional specification places this substance on Annex II of EU Regulation 1223/2009 as a CMR Cat 1A agent absolutely prohibited in cosmetic preparations within the EU.
Known concerns
- Contains 1,3-butadiene >0.1% w/w — EU Annex II CMR Cat 1A carcinogen, prohibited in cosmetics
- Sweetening process does not reduce butadiene concentration below regulatory threshold
- IARC Group 1 human carcinogen — zero-risk approach required under EU cosmetics law
