About

A refinery gas stream containing light hydrocarbons with potential 1,3-butadiene contamination; the butadiene content at above trace levels places this in the EU Annex II banned category for cosmetic substances.

Refinery gases are complex mixtures of light hydrocarbons and process gases collected during petroleum refining operations. The 'butadiene >0.1% w/w' qualifier flags a Category 1A carcinogenic impurity concern under EU Regulation 1223/2009 Annex II and CLP Regulation. The heterogeneous nature of this byproduct stream — which may also contain hydrogen sulfide and other toxic process chemicals — makes it wholly unsuitable and prohibited in cosmetics.

Known concerns

  • 1,3-Butadiene >0.1% w/w — Category 1A carcinogen, EU Annex II prohibited
  • May contain hydrogen sulfide and other toxic refinery byproducts
  • Industrial gas stream with no defined cosmetic safety profile
