About
Wheat-gluten peptides used to condition skin and hair. Linked to facial-wash sensitisation cases in Japan when high molecular-weight peptides (Glupearl 19S) were used.
Hydrolyzed wheat gluten (CAS 100684-25-1) consists of peptides from acid or enzymatic digestion of wheat gluten. The 2018 CIR reassessment (after Japanese wheat-allergy cases from Glupearl 19S soap) concluded the ingredient is safe only when formulated to minimize peptides of molecular weight greater than 3500 Da, avoided on damaged skin and in products that may contact mucous membranes. Functions: skin/hair conditioning, film formation. Used at 0.1–2%. Coeliac patients: topical use is generally not systemic but specialist products should avoid it.
