About
A mild amphoteric surfactant with hydroxyl-substituted C12 and C14 alkyl chains, providing gentle cleansing and foam enhancement in rinse-off products.
Hydroxylauryl/hydroxymyristyl betaine is a betaine-type amphoteric surfactant with terminal hydroxyl groups on the C12 (lauryl) and C14 (myristyl) alkyl chains. The hydroxyl groups increase hydrophilicity and reduce critical micelle concentration, improving mildness. Not listed in EU Annexes II or III. This ingredient has a long history of safe use in facial cleansers, shampoos, and body washes. It is structurally similar to lauryl hydroxysultaine, a well-established cosmetic ingredient.
Skin benefits
- Low-irritation cleansing base for sensitive skin products
- Viscosity modification and foam stabilization
- Synergistic with anionic surfactants to reduce irritation
Known concerns
- Minor eye irritation at high concentrations
- Mild skin drying with extended use in susceptible individuals
