Laureth-40 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Laureth-40 is the polyethylene glycol 40-mole ether of lauryl alcohol (dodecanol), CAS 9002-92-0. Listed in CosIng with emulsifying and surfactant functions and no EU restrictions. The high EO degree makes it primarily a solubilizer and co-surfactant rather than a primary emulsifier. Like other laureth compounds, it has been reviewed within CIR assessments of fatty alcohol ethoxylates and found safe at cosmetic use levels. EU GMP requires monitoring of 1,4-dioxane as a trace impurity from the ethoxylation process. The ingredient is well tolerated on skin at normal use concentrations.
Skin benefits
- Strong solubilizing capacity for clear formulations
- Effective for fragrance and active ingredient solubilization
- Compatible with cationic and anionic ingredients
Known concerns
- 1,4-dioxane trace contamination must be monitored
- Mild skin or eye irritation possible at elevated concentrations
- Limited standalone toxicological dataset
