About
Menaquinone-7 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Menaquinone-7 (MK-7) is the predominant form of vitamin K2 found in natto and produced by bacterial fermentation. It serves as an essential cofactor for gamma-glutamyl carboxylase, which activates proteins involved in coagulation (factors II, VII, IX, X, protein C and S) and also osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein. The EU has authorised MK-7 as a food supplement (EFSA ID 1554) and it appears in CosIng for cosmetic use. The primary caution is that topical use near the eye or use in individuals on anticoagulant therapy (warfarin/coumadin) may interfere with coagulation — warfarin blocks vitamin K epoxide reductase and competes with MK-7. However, in healthy individuals without anticoagulant medication, MK-7 has an excellent safety record.
Skin benefits
- Activates vitamin K-dependent proteins in skin — supports skin barrier and connective tissue
- May reduce under-eye dark circles by supporting capillary integrity
- Anti-inflammatory properties via activation of protein S
- Emerging evidence for photoaging protection
Known concerns
- Anticoagulant interaction — may reduce warfarin efficacy or increase bleeding risk if applied to broken skin
- Not permitted in products intended for use near the eye in some member states
- No major EU restriction but some national variation in permitted use
- Generally recognised as safe in food supplements — cosmetic context less studied but low concern
