Meprednisone is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Meprednisone (11β,17,21-trihydroxy-16β-methylpregna-1,4-diene-3,20-dione) is a synthetic corticosteroid approximately 5× more potent than hydrocortisone. Corticosteroids are restricted under EU Annex III of the Cosmetics Regulation when present for their anti-inflammatory action. Chronic topical corticosteroid use causes skin thinning, striae, and systemic absorption effects. As a pharmaceutical-grade anti-inflammatory, meprednisone has no safe use level in cosmetic leave-on products.
Known concerns
- EU Annex III restricted — corticosteroid with high anti-inflammatory potency
- Skin atrophy and telangiectasia risk with chronic use
- Systemic glucocorticoid effects possible
