About

Methylprednisolone Aceponate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Methylprednisolone aceponate (MPA) is a diester corticosteroid (21-acetate + 17-propionate) providing high lipophilicity and sustained topical activity. Like clobetasol propionate, it is a prescription pharmaceutical with well-documented atrophogenic effects on skin with chronic use. The hazard statements H360 (developmental/reproductive toxicity), H372 (specific target organ toxicity — adrenal axis), and H361 (suspected reproductive toxicity) reflect systemic concern from dermal absorption. EU SCCS has repeatedly concluded that corticosteroids have no place in cosmetic formulations due to their pharmacological mechanism of action. The restricted pharmaceutical status (prescription-only in most EU member states) is the key regulatory fact here.

Skin benefits

  • Potent anti-inflammatory (prescription use)

Known concerns

  • Prescription pharmaceutical — not permitted in cosmetic products
  • Reproductive/developmental toxicity (H360, H361)
  • Skin atrophy with chronic use
  • Systemic effects via HPA axis suppression
  • EU SCCS advises against corticosteroids in cosmetics
  • No cosmetic ingredient status in CosIng
