About
A heavy catalytic cracked petroleum naphtha containing benzene above 0.1% w/w, prohibited for cosmetic use under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 due to its carcinogenic aromatic content.
Heavy catalytic cracked naphtha results from fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) of heavy petroleum vacuum distillates. The catalytic cracking process generates branched alkanes and aromatics, with benzene concentrations that can exceed the 0.1% threshold. The heavy end of the catalytic cracked naphtha also contains 2-ring aromatics (naphthalene homologues) which are themselves regulated PAHs. This stream is banned under EU Annex II.
Known concerns
- Contains >0.1% benzene — EU Annex II restricted CMR substance
- Category 1A carcinogen under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
- Contains naphthalene and C2/C3-naphthalene homologues (PAHs)
- Catalyst fines from FCC unit may be present
- Heavy aromatic matrix with elevated aspiration hazard
