About

A heavy catalytic reformate naphtha containing benzene above 0.1% w/w, classified as a presumed human carcinogen and prohibited for cosmetic application under EU Annex II.

Heavy catalytic reformed naphtha is produced by high-severity catalytic reforming to convert C6-C12 alkanes and cycloalkanes into aromatics. This stream is intentionally enriched in aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, xylene) for fuel blending. The benzene content is an inherent consequence of the reforming process and predictably exceeds 0.1% w/w. Cosmetic use is prohibited under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.

Known concerns

  • Contains >0.1% benzene — EU Annex II restricted CMR substance
  • Category 1A carcinogen under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
  • Intentionally aromatic-enriched stream — higher benzene than most
  • Contains BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes) complex
  • Flammable with high aromatic content
