About
A light thermal cracked naphtha from petroleum containing benzene at levels above 0.1% w/w, prohibited for cosmetic use under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 due to its carcinogenic aromatic content.
Thermal cracking produces olefins and aromatics through high-temperature hydrocarbon decomposition. The light thermal cracked naphtha fraction has elevated benzene and light aromatic content relative to straight-run naphtha. The cracked olefinic fraction additionally raises concerns for skin oxidation and sensitization. This stream is prohibited in cosmetic products under EU Annex II regardless of the specific cracking severity.
Known concerns
- Contains >0.1% benzene — EU Annex II restricted CMR substance
- Category 1A carcinogen under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
- Contains cracked C5-C6 olefins — potential skin sensitizers
- Flammable hydrocarbon mixture with low flash point
