Nonyl Nonoxynol-5 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Nonyl Nonoxynol-5 is a nonionic surfactant of the alkylphenol ethoxylate (APE) family, derived from nonylphenol condensed with approximately 5 moles of ethylene oxide. Nonylphenol and its short-chain ethoxylates (including Nonoxynol-5) are recognized as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in aquatic environments and are suspected of exhibiting estrogenic activity. The EU has progressively restricted nonylphenol ethoxylates in consumer products; they are classified as Article 14 substances under Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (REACH) for restrictions on the marketing and use of certain dangerous substances. The CIR has deferred review of this ingredient class pending further regulatory evaluation.
