About

A prostaglandin analog used in eyelash growth serums — the SCCS says it's NOT safe for cosmetic use due to risks of permanent eye color change and other serious side effects.

Norbimatoprost is a synthetic prostaglandin analog closely related to bimatoprost (Latisse®, a prescription glaucoma drug). Used in some eyelash growth serums to stimulate hair follicle growth. The SCCS (2022, 2025) concluded that NO prostaglandin analog, including norbimatoprost, can be considered safe for cosmetic eyelash/eyebrow use due to insufficient toxicological data and potent pharmacological activity at very low concentrations. Known adverse effects include irreversible iris darkening, periorbital fat loss (sunken eyes), eyelid hyperpigmentation, chronic eye irritation, and conjunctival hyperemia. Several EU member states have taken enforcement action against products containing prostaglandin analogs.
