A C8 aliphatic aldehyde (octyl aldehyde) giving classic orange-peel citrus notes. Common perfumery and flavor material, FEMA GRAS.
Octanal (n-octanal, caprylic aldehyde, CAS 124-13-0) is a saturated C8 aliphatic aldehyde, naturally abundant in citrus essential oils and widely used as both flavor (FEMA GRAS) and fragrance. Saturated aldehydes are less protein-reactive than α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, but the -CHO group still contributes to sensitization burden and oxidizes on air exposure. RIFM/IFRA restrict cosmetic use to controlled percentages. Not an EU Annex III specifically declared allergen, but the broader "aldehyde family" sensitization awareness applies. Upper-yellow (75) rather than green reflects the aldehyde-class consideration in leave-on contexts.
