About
Oxalide — a macrocyclic-ether musk, a modern 'cleaner' musk replacement for problematic polycyclic musks.
Oxalide (ethylene brassylate, CAS 1725-01-5) is a macrocyclic lactone musk — specifically a 17-membered ring containing an ether linkage — used in perfumery for its soft, sweet, musky note. It is one of the preferred musks in modern fragrance formulation because macrocyclic musks are considered safer than the legacy nitro musks (largely phased out) and some polycyclic musks (such as HHCB and AHTN) now under environmental scrutiny. IFRA/RIFM cover its safety-in-use; it is not on the EU 26 fragrance-allergen list. Environmental fate of musks more broadly remains a topic of scientific review.
