PEG-3 STEARATE

Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A low-degree PEG ester of stearic acid with 3 moles of EO, used as a lipophilic emulsifier in cosmetic formulations with some skin interaction potential.
PEG-3 Stearate is the polyethylene glycol (3 mol EO average) monoester of stearic acid. With a low HLB value (~7-8), it is primarily a W/O emulsifier and is often used in combination with more hydrophilic emulsifiers. The EU Cosmetics Regulation permits its use without restriction, though it is not extensively studied compared to higher-EO variants. Low-EO PEG esters have somewhat greater potential for skin penetration and irritation, particularly in敏感皮肤. SCCS guidance on PEG impurities applies.
Skin benefits
- W/O emulsification for rich, protective textures
- Contributes to skin conditioning
Known concerns
- Greater skin interaction than higher-EO PEGs
- Potential trace EO/1,4-dioxane contamination
