About
A low-ethoxylation glyceryl ester that acts as a lipophilic emulsifier and opacifying agent in cream formulations, giving products a rich, milky appearance.
With only 4 moles of ethylene oxide per glyceryl tristearate backbone, this ingredient is relatively lipophilic and functions as a W/O emulsifier or co-emulsifier. The low EO count reduces the risk of residual ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane compared to higher-EO relatives. The CIR panel has evaluated PEG glyceryl esters across a range of EO lengths and concluded they are safe for use in cosmetic products, with particular attention to purity from processing by-products. No specific restrictions exist under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
Skin benefits
- Imparts a rich, creamy opacity to lotions and creams
- Emollient fatty acid chain (stearic) contributes skin-softening properties
Known concerns
- Low EO level still requires monitoring for 1,4-dioxane as a manufacturing impurity
- Not suitable for clear gel formulations due to its opacifying nature
