Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A highly ethoxylated PEG isostearate with 40 moles of EO, functioning as a hydrophilic emulsifier with excellent skin tolerance from its branched fatty acid structure.
PEG-40 Isostearate is the polyethylene glycol (40 mol EO average) ester of isostearic acid. The high ethoxylation degree gives it strong water solubility and high HLB (~17), while the branched isostearic acid reduces crystallization and skin irritation. It is permitted under EU Cosmetics Regulation without restriction and is considered one of the milder high-EO PEG esters. The large molecular size limits systemic absorption. At typical use concentrations in emulsions, it presents minimal sensitization or irritation risk.
Skin benefits
- Hydrophilic emulsifier with smooth feel
- Excellent skin tolerance
- Branched structure reduces irritation
Known concerns
- Potential trace EO/1,4-dioxane contamination from manufacturing
