About
A plant-derived emulsifier that combines phytosterols with a short PEG chain — helps stabilise formulations while delivering cholesterol-like barrier benefits to skin.
PEG-5 Phytosterol is the polyethylene glycol ether of beta-sitosterol (a plant sterol) with 5 moles of ethylene oxide. It functions as an emulsifier and skin-conditioning agent. Phytosterols are structural analogues of cholesterol, a key component of the skin's lipid barrier, making this ingredient particularly beneficial for barrier-repair formulations. The short PEG chain provides water solubility while maintaining the sterol's skin-affinity. CIR reviews of phytosterol ingredients support their safety. Low degree of ethoxylation minimises 1,4-dioxane concerns.
Skin benefits
- Barrier repair and reinforcement
- Cholesterol-analogue skin conditioning
- Emulsification
- Anti-inflammatory phytosterol benefits
Known concerns
- Potential trace 1,4-dioxane from ethoxylation (minimal at 5 EO)
- Plant sterol source may be from soy — relevant for soy-allergic individuals
