Polyethylglutamate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Polyethylglutamate is a polymer of ethyl glutamate units (imino-5-ethoxy-1,5-dioxo-2,1-pentanediyl), derived from the amino acid glutamic acid. It functions as a film-forming agent and humectant in cosmetic formulations. The polymer is too large to penetrate the skin barrier, reducing systemic exposure concerns. EU Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 does not list polyamino acid polymers of this type in restriction annexes, and available safety data support their use as non-irritating film-formers suitable for sensitive skin applications.
Skin benefits
- Forms a flexible, breathable film that reduces transepidermal water loss
- Conditions and smooths skin and hair surfaces
- Provides humectant moisture retention benefits
Known concerns
- Film-forming properties may cause slight tightness if used at high concentrations in leave-on products
- Generally considered safe but limited specific regulatory documentation
