About
An acetylated derivative of polysorbate 80 used as a mild, hydrophilic emulsifier and stabiliser in cosmetic formulations, particularly for sensitive-skin products.
Polysorbate 80 Acetate is a modified polysorbate in which the free hydroxyl groups of the sorbitan ring have been acetylated. This reduces the HLB slightly and increases its solubility in certain oil phases. EU Regulation 1223/2009 does not restrict polysorbate acetates specifically. The ingredient is considered safe and is used particularly in cosmetic emulsions targeting sensitive skin, as acetylation further reduces any residual irritancy potential compared to standard polysorbates.
Skin benefits
- Provides stable emulsification with mild profile
- Can improve product texture and consumer aesthetics
Known concerns
- No EU restrictions; very low concern ingredient
- Limited skin irritation or sensitisation data but expected to be milder than parent Polysorbate 80
