About
Steareth-5 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Steareth-5 is the polyethylene glycol 5-mole ether of stearyl alcohol (n-octadecanol). Listed in CosIng with emulsifying and surfactant functions, with no EU Annex restrictions. Lower EO degrees provide stronger lipophilic character, making Steareth-5 particularly effective as a co-emulsifier in o/w systems and as a consistency agent. The CIR Expert Panel has assessed the Steareth series as safe for cosmetic use at concentrations up to established limits. As with all ethoxylated surfactants, 1,4-dioxane is a controlled impurity. Steareth-5 is commonly used in combination with Steareth-20 series for optimized HLB balance.
Skin benefits
- Effective primary or co-emulsifier for o/w systems
- Provides rich, non-greasy skin feel
- Improves formulation thickness and texture
Known concerns
- 1,4-dioxane trace impurity from ethoxylation
- Mild-to-moderate skin or eye irritation possible at higher use levels
- Higher lipophilicity compared to high-EO variants
