A saturated analog of citronellal/citral — gentler aldehyde chemistry. Used for fresh citrus-green notes with low sensitization burden.
Tetrahydrogeranial (CAS 5988-91-0) is the fully saturated aldehyde analog of geranial/citral. Removing the conjugated and isolated double bonds eliminates the α,β-unsaturated electrophilic center that makes citral an EU Annex III fragrance allergen, and so tetrahydrogeranial has a markedly gentler skin profile than its parent. Saturated aliphatic aldehydes still contribute mildly to the fragrance aldehyde class, but sensitization classifications are absent. RIFM/IFRA manage its use at standard low percentages. Good tier reflects the safer-than-citral positioning with a clean regulatory profile.
