About

A Lactobacillus ferment of kelp and molasses — hydrating, soothing, and antioxidant. Gentle, with modest iodine content from the kelp.

This ingredient is the filtrate of a Lactobacillus fermentation using Laminaria japonica (kombu kelp), molasses and water as substrate. The fermentation liberates low-molecular-weight sugars, amino acids, lactic and other organic acids, and soluble kelp polysaccharides (fucoidan, alginate fragments) plus trace iodine and minerals. In cosmetics it functions as a skin conditioner, humectant and mild antioxidant, often in soothing and hydrating leave-on formulas. Tolerance is generally good in sensitive-skin panels. Main caveats: kelp delivers trace iodine (topical absorption is minimal but worth noting for thyroid-sensitive users at very high loads), batch composition varies by fermentation, and there is no dedicated CIR monograph. No significant GHS hazards; biodegradable.
