About
Among the most hazardous of the Nonoxynol family, this very low ethoxylated variant is strongly linked to endocrine disruption and is banned from EU cosmetic use.
Nonoxynol-2 is a nonionic surfactant with a very low degree of ethoxylation (average of 2 ethylene oxide units), making it highly lipophilic and prone to rapid degradation to nonylphenol. It is classified as a Category 1 endocrine-disrupting substance under EU criteria and is subject to restriction under REACH Annex XVII (entry 46a), prohibiting its use in cosmetic products. Its environmental toxicity and bioaccumulation potential are well established.
Known concerns
- Category 1 endocrine disruptor (EU criteria)
- EU Annex XVII ban in cosmetic products
- Highly toxic to aquatic organisms
