About
With an average of 20 ethylene oxide units, this higher-ethoxylated Nonoxynol has diminished endocrine activity but remains prohibited in EU cosmetic products under REACH restrictions.
Nonoxynol-20 is a nonionic surfactant of the polyethylene glycol mono(4-nonylphenyl) ether family. The higher ethoxylation degree substantially reduces its lipophilicity and its potential to degrade to free nonylphenol compared to lower-ethoxylated variants. Despite this improved profile, EU REACH Annex XVII entry 46a applies a class-level restriction to all nonylphenol ethoxylates in cosmetic formulations. Environmental concerns regarding aquatic toxicity and pseudo-persistence in sewage treatment effluents remain.
Known concerns
- EU REACH Annex XVII restriction in cosmetic products
- Residual endocrine disruption risk (nonylphenyl)
- Aquatic toxicity
- Environmental persistence in water systems
