Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A low-ethoxylated sorbitan oleate (sorbitan monooleate with ~3 EO units) used as an emulsifier and surfactant in cosmetic formulations, closely related to Polysorbate 81.
PEG-3 Sorbitan Oleate is a sorbitol-derived ethoxylated ester of oleic acid (analogous to Polysorbate 81 with only 3 EO units rather than the typical 20). The low EO degree gives it somewhat more lipophilic character. EU Regulation 1223/2009 does not specifically restrict PEG-sorbitan oleates; they are permitted as surfactants and emulsifiers. Standard residual solvent testing (including 1,4-dioxane) is recommended per SCCS Notes of Guidance.
Skin benefits
- Provides emulsification for oil-phase ingredients
- Aids in creating smooth, stable cosmetic emulsions
Known concerns
- Low EO degree slightly increases concern for skin interaction vs. higher-EO polysorbates
- 1,4-dioxane residual monitoring required
