About
Long pepper fruit — a traditional Ayurvedic botanical with piperine and piperlongumine. Cosmetic use must stay low-level because of the reactive alkaloid profile.
Piper longum fruit is the dried spike of the long pepper plant, related to black pepper but richer in piperlongumine in addition to piperine. Both compounds are pharmacologically active alkaloids with documented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and — at higher concentrations — cytotoxic effects in cell-based studies. Traditional Ayurvedic topical use is long and broad, but peer-reviewed cosmetic toxicology is limited. Piperine is a known skin/mucosal irritant at elevated levels. EU CosIng lists the ingredient. Cosmetic use should stay well below 1%. No CIR monograph; no IARC classification.
