About

Ambenonium chloride is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Ambenonium chloride is a reversible quaternary ammonium anticholinesterase agent used in veterinary medicine for myasthenia gravis and neuromuscular blockade reversal. Its mechanism of action (acetylcholinesterase inhibition leading to accumulation of acetylcholine) is pharmacologically opposite to what is desired in cosmetic products. Systemic absorption of quaternary ammonium compounds through skin is generally limited, but the pharmacological risk at any significant absorption makes it unsuitable. It is not listed in EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and is presumed prohibited as a pharmacologically active substance.

Known concerns

  • Anticholinesterase pharmacological activity — contraindicated in cosmetics
  • No EU cosmetic authorization
  • Possible systemic effects from skin absorption
  • Drug-drug interaction potential with commonly used medications
