About

Glycereth-5 Lactate is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.

Glycereth-5 Lactate is a polyethylene glycol ether of glycerin (5 EO units) esterified with lactic acid, combining the moisturizing properties of glycerin with those of lactate. The lower ethoxylation level (5 EO) means reduced concern for manufacturing impurities compared to higher PEG ingredients. Lactic acid is a well-known natural moisturizing factor component. This ingredient is not listed in EU Annexes II-III restricting cosmetic ingredients, placing it in the generally permitted category. It is commonly used in skin care and personal care formulations.

Skin benefits

  • Strong humectant - attracts water to skin
  • Lactic acid component supports skin barrier function
  • Conditioning properties improve skin feel
  • Used in moisturizers and serums

Known concerns

  • Mild AHA activity from lactic acid component
  • May increase photosensitivity in some individuals
  • Generally mild but monitor in sensitive skin formulations
