Myreth-5 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Myreth-5 is the polyethylene glycol 5-mole ether of myristyl alcohol (tetradecanol), CAS 27306-79-2. Listed in CosIng with emulsifying and surfactant functions and no EU Annex restrictions. The C14 chain combined with 5 moles of ethylene oxide provides intermediate lipophilicity, making it suitable as a primary or co-emulsifier in o/w systems. Like other fatty alcohol ethoxylates, Myreth-5 has been reviewed within the broader CIR assessment of ethoxylated surfactants as safe for cosmetic use. The ethoxylation byproduct 1,4-dioxane is the primary impurity of concern, controlled under EU cosmetic GMP to trace levels (typically <10 ppm).
Skin benefits
- Versatile emulsifier for various cosmetic formulations
- Provides good skin feel due to C14 chain
- Stable across typical cosmetic pH ranges
Known concerns
- 1,4-dioxane trace contamination from ethoxylation
- Mild skin or eye irritation possible
- Limited dedicated toxicological dataset
