About

Flax seed powder — omega-rich, soothing, and one of the safest botanical exfoliants.

Linum usitatissimum (flax/linseed) seed powder is rich in alpha-linolenic acid, lignans (secoisolariciresinol diglucoside) and mucilaginous polysaccharides that form a soothing film on skin. It is used in masks, cleansers and scrubs. CIR has reviewed flaxseed-derived cosmetic ingredients and found them safe as used. Raw flax contains trace cyanogenic glycosides, but dermal exposure is not toxicologically meaningful. No EU restrictions apply. Highly biodegradable.

Skin benefits

  • Rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and lignans
  • Mucilage content gives soothing, film-forming feel
  • Natural gentle exfoliant

Known concerns

  • Trace cyanogenic glycosides in raw flax — negligible topically
  • Mechanical abrasion with coarse grades
  • Rare seed allergy
