About
Love-in-a-mist seed powder — a gentle exfoliant and minor emollient. Not to be confused with black seed (Nigella sativa); stay in yellow caution.
Nigella damascena (love-in-a-mist) is an ornamental Ranunculaceae species distinct from the more famous Nigella sativa (black seed / kalonji). Its seeds contain damascenine (an alkaloid unique to this species), saponins and a fatty-acid fraction. The powder is used in cosmetics as a mild exfoliant and for its lipid content. Oral toxicity has been reported for damascenine, though topical exposure is expected to be minimal. No EU Annex II/III listing and no CIR monograph. Because this species is less studied than N. sativa it retains a cautious default.
