Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A dual-function PEG ester combining lauric acid and tartaric acid-derived moieties, used as an emulsifier and co-surfactant that improves product texture and skin feel.
The tartrate component (derived from tartaric acid, a fruit acid) is unusual in this class of ingredients and contributes some mild chelating properties in addition to its emulsification function. The 6-mol EO laurate ester provides water solubility and mildness. Tartaric acid derivatives are well-known in food and cosmetics and are not subject to any specific EU restriction. Under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, this ingredient is a permitted nonionic surfactant/emulsifier with no annex restrictions.
Skin benefits
- Tartaric moiety may provide mild exfoliating benefit at low pH formulations
- Contributes to smooth, elegant skin feel in emulsions
Known concerns
- Contains a mild alpha-hydroxy acid (tartaric) that may increase skin sensitivity to sunlight in some users
- Residual 1,4-dioxane from ethoxylation process must be controlled
