Steareth-14 is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Steareth-14 is the polyethylene glycol 14-mole ether of stearyl alcohol (n-octadecanol). Listed in CosIng with emulsifying and surfactant functions, no EU Annex restrictions. Lower ethoxylation degrees retain more of the C18 lipophilic character, making Steareth-14 effective as an emulsifying co-surfactant. The steareth class has been reviewed by CIR and found safe. As with all ethoxylated surfactants, 1,4-dioxane (from ethylene oxide processing) is the main impurity concern and is regulated under EU GMP. Steareth-14 may have slightly higher irritation potential than higher-EO variants due to increased lipophilicity.
Skin benefits
- Effective co-emulsifier for stable o/w systems
- Provides rich, protective skin feel
- Improves formulation thickness and consistency
Known concerns
- 1,4-dioxane trace contamination from ethoxylation process
- Mild-to-moderate skin or eye irritation possible
- Slightly higher lipophilicity may increase interaction with skin barrier
