Doxylamine is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Doxylamine succinate is a first-generation H1-antihistamine used in oral over-the-counter sleep aids (e.g., Unisom). Its pharmacological activity (CNS depression) makes it unsuitable for cosmetic application, and it is not listed in EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 Annexes I–VI with authorized use. Topical antihistamines can cause skin sensitization. The ingredient may occasionally appear in raw material impurity profiles but is not intentionally added as a cosmetic functional ingredient.
Known concerns
- Pharmacological CNS depressant not appropriate for cosmetics
- H1-antihistamines can cause skin sensitization on topical application
- No EU cosmetic authorization
- May cause drowsiness in systemic exposure
