About
A transgenic cow-produced analogue of human Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), sharing the 53-amino-acid sequence and signalling properties of the natural growth factor.
This recombinant human EGF analogue is expressed in Bos taurus mammary tissue via transgenic technology, identical in amino-acid sequence to endogenous human EGF. EGF and its analogues are potent mitogens that stimulate cell proliferation, making them effective in skin-renewal applications. The SCCS has not issued a specific opinion on recombinant EGF in cosmetics; however, the ingredient's potency raises questions about appropriate concentration control. Under Regulation (EU) 1223/2009, growth factors in cosmetics are not explicitly restricted but must not cause harm to human health.
Function
Skin benefits
- Antimicrobial activity through growth-factor-mediated wound healing
- Antioxidant and hair-conditioning functions
- May accelerate epidermal regeneration
Known concerns
- EGF is a potent mitogen; uncontrolled proliferation signalling is a theoretical risk
- Transgenic animal origin raises religious and ethical concerns for some consumers
- No specific EU safety assessment for this production platform
